Imphal, January 13 2018:
Even though 2017 was a year which recorded the highest rainfall at Imphal in 63 years, the rapidly decreasing water level of Loktak Lake will eventually force one of the turbines of the Loktak Hydro Electric Power Project to be shut down.
According to an official source from the Loktak Hydro Electric Power Project, one of the three 35 MW turbines of the 105 MW project, will be shut down from January 15 due to low level of lake water.
The current water level of Loktak lake is at 768.32 metres, the source added.
All the three turbines have been operating to their full potential till the time of this report as per the official information.
It may be mentioned that according to Indian Council of Agriculture Research (ICAR) Lamphelpat, Imphal received around 2439.4 mm of rain last year (till December) which is the highest in around 63 years.
The State experienced floods on five occasions last year, which killed 20 people, after the volume of rainfall increased by around 68.71 percent, from the annual 1446.3 mm of rainfall the State normally experiences.
The State had experienced some heavy rainfall in the past, namely in 1991 (2110.06 mm) and in 1993 (2171 mm), the official added.
Notably, the State has been facing shortage of power generation and supply.
