Imphal, June 08, 2013:
Manipur People's Party advisor Okram joy Singh has submitted memorandum to the Governor, Chief Minister, Manipur Legislative Assembly Speaker and Law & Legislative Affairs Minister proposing that the old Assembly building be preserved as a 'political museum' rather than its conversion into other facility.
Speaking to mediapersons at the MPP office today, the former MLA said that the old assembly building is a symbol of parliamentary and democratic institution where the constitutional, political and administrative functions of Manipur had been performed over the past five decades starting from the chief ministership of Mairembam Koireng Singh to the present incumbent O Ibobi Singh.
Strongly criticising recent decision of the State Cabinet to hand over the assembly building to Imphal Municipal Council with the assertion that usage of the historic structure for non-political purposes would amount to diluting important decisions and legislation adopted by the legislators, he reiterated proposal for preservation of the same by converting it to a political museum.
Recounting that the Assembly had adopted four resolutions in between 1989 and 2008 for establishment of the Manipur Legislative Council as is existent in other states, Joy said the assembly proposals would be a reality when the Government of India approves the said resolutions.
Informing that the old assembly building is in a highly deplorable condition due to negligence, he demanded that Govt ensure proper maintenance of the historic building.
