Joint Committee urges Central, State Govts

Convenor of the Joint Students' Coordinating Committee (JSCC) has urged the Central and State Government to settle the uproar following the Myanmar's attempt to set up a base camp at Hollenphai village� which is within the State territory, before the students' bodies launched agitation.
Addressing the 48th foundation day of All Manipur Students' Union (AMSU) today at Thangmeiband Khunthokngabi Lairembi Mandop, convenor of JSCC Longjam Umakanta said the students' coordinating body is ready to launch agitation any time if the Government fails to make sincere attempt to resolve the uproar relating to the border at the earliest.
He said that the Government should not take the purported lost of State territory lightly while adding that it is the firm stand of the students' body not to compromise the territory of Manipur while constructing Indo-Myanmar border fencing.
Any deceitful attempt for incursion on the State's territory should never be allowed to happen, he firmly avowed.
Saying that the students' bodies would launch agitation if the matter is not resolved at the earliest, Longjam Umakanta urged the concerned authority not to wait till the students launch movement over the issue.
The 48th AMSU Foundation Day was graced by former president of the students' body, Leihaobam Saratchandra and its incumbent president Th Naresh as the chief guest and president respectively.
Former president of AMSU, H Badankumar and its adviser Kh Ratan were the guests of honour.
Speaking at the occasion, AMSU vice-president, Sanasam Subashchandra recalled that the students' union was formed on August 28, 1965 at the residence of Leihaothabam Saratchandra at Keishampat Laishom Leirak a day after four including three students were killed in police action against students who were agitating against the artificial scarcity of rice in the State.
Since its inception, the students' body took active part in various issues of the State including movement against foreigners, statehood movement, establishment of MU and health centres.
Subashchandra further urged all concerned students' bodies to shun separatist mentality and work for the common interest of the State.
Laishram Mangi, survivor of police action of August 27, 1965; Nameirakpam Modhusudan, who presided the meeting for the formation of AMSU and Loitongbam Tomba, the first general secretary of AMSU were honoured during the occasion.
Nameirakpam Modhusu-dan recalled that August 28, 1965 was very inauspicious.
The students' body was formed a day after three students were killed and many suffered injuries while several others were jailed.
A blood donation camp was also organised at the headquarters of AMSU in connection with the Foundation Day celebration.
