Imphal, May 16 2017:
In solidarity with the nation-wide protests
against the "provocative" statements made by Governor and
Deputy Governor of Reserve Bank of India (RBI), officers and
staff of banks staged a protest demonstration in front of SBI MG
Avenue office, Thangal Bazar today.
The protest was staged under the aegis of United Forum
of Bank Unions (UFBU).
The protestors holding candles in
their hands chanted slogans against the statements.
Speaking to newspersons, Chabungbam Lilabanta, state
secretary of All India Bank Officers' Confederation (AIBOC),
a constituent of UFBU said that the protest was demonstrated
against the "provocative" statements made by RBI Governor
Urjit Patel and Deputy Governor Viral Acharya wherein they
talked about privatisation and merger of banks.
He asserted that the public sector and nationalised banks
are based on social banking but private banks are set up only
for profit.
He claimed that there have been instances where past Governments
attempted to challenge nationalised banks.
He asked as to why nationalised banks should be privatised
instead of initiating action against cases of Non-Performing
Asset (NPA).
Reiterating that a written missive had been sent to the
Union Finance Minister requesting him to clarify over the
matter, he cautioned that different forms of agitation will be
launched if the two RBI officers do not retract their statements.
