The 48 hours Mayai Lambi bandh called by the JAC constituted in connection with the rape of woman by her father-in-law on March 29 came into effect from 5 am today.
On account of the bandh, passenger carriers stayed off the road.
Shops and markets of Mayang Imphal Bazar remained shut.
A protest demonstration was also staged today at Mayang Imphal Thongkhong under the aegis of the JAC.
The protesters blocked roads using boulders and timber.
They put up placards which read as, "Protect women's rights", "Punish who violates women's rights and dignity" etc.
Later the demonstrators resolved to auction all the properties of the accused Phulindro on April 20 at Mayang Imphal Keithel if the JAC's demand for compensating the victim with Rs 20 lakhs is not fulfilled by April 19 .
