Legal awareness programme

A two-day 'legal awareness programme' jointly organised by Manipur State Commission for Women and College of Social Work got underway from today at Lainingthou Khamlangba Shanglen, Uripok Polem Leikai with Commission Chairperson Dr L ibetombi Devi, members June Rose Vaiphei and H Piteswori Devi, and College of Social Work Director S Saratkumar Sharma gracing the inauguration session as
the presidium members.
The programme is being held under the sponsorship of National Commission for Women.
Pointing out that Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act 2005 was specifically constituted to protect and legally redress various acts of violence committed against the women, Dr Ibetombi in her address said women comprise legally married woman, unmarried girls and even female partner of spouses living together out of the conventional wedlock.
Stating that not only physical assault but mental torture of women on various grounds too amount to domestic violence, she conceded that until and unless there is harmonious marital state and women protected from acts of violence no amount of awareness campaigns would yield the desired result.
Speaking at the occasion, Saratkumar Sharma observed that existence of women-protective legislation would be more meaningful and effective in eradicating the social malaise of domestic violence if all section of the society are made aware that violence against women are punishable under the law.
