Imphal, July 31 2019:
The Apunba Shinmi Lup Awang Maikei (ASLAM) Kanglatongbi, organised a protest rally today morning demanding that the Government identify the sites for sand mining and stone quarrying, as well as demanding the authorities concerned to provide a means of livelihood for the affected people and workers.
The rally which was participated by a large number of workers and labourers began from Awang Sekmai and passed along Awang Leikinthabi and reached Koirengei before they were stopped by police at Koirengei Thong.
As they could not advance any further, the protesters staged a sit in protest at the area.
Speaking to media persons by the sideline of the sit in protest, president of ASLAM, Oinam Yumsangbi said that many sand miners and workers of stone quarries, who have been earning their livelihood, sustaining their families and their children' education with their labour, have been rendered jobless after the ban on sand mining and stone quarrying.
He then demanded the State Government to make necessary preparations to ease the suffering of the poor people who are now left with no option to sustain their families and children anymore.
During the protest, the people held placards demanding the Government to consider the plight of the labourers.
