One killed in land row, locals burn down houses

Bishnupur, August 06 2019:
In a blood curdling incident, a man was decapitated to death with a spade due to a land dispute and in retaliation, locals burned down four houses belonging to the accused and his brothers at Kumbi Setupur Mayai Leikai Ward No 2, under Kumbi PS, at around 11.30 am today.
According to information received from the spot, the deceased has been identified as one Khangembam Achou Singh (42) s/o Kh Ningthouremba while the accused has been identified as Nongmaithem Surjit alias Athebi (37) s/o N Chingkhu, his neighbour.
The source informed that there had been a land dispute between the two families for quite some time and narrated that from the early morning today, there had been some tension between the two individuals.

Following an argument, the accused Surjit reportedly decapitated Achou with a spade inside his own residence.
Pointing out that locals came across the gruesome sight and found Achou's decapitated body lying near the back portion of his residence, the source informed that by the time the incident came to light, the accused had already surrendered himself to Kumbi PS.
On the other hand, the irate locals destroyed and burned down four houses belonging to the accused and his brothers.
A large number of police personnel rushed to the area to control the situation and a fire tender of Moirang fire service also came to put out the fire but they were stopped and prevented from going any further by the irate mob.
Initially, the locals also prevented the police from taking the dead body but after a forensic science team arrived, an agreement was reached with the locals and the dead body was picked up and a case was also registered by the police.
The JAC formed in connection with the incident has demanded stern punishment for those involved in the crime and has urged the authority concerned to do the needful, assuring that the JAC will also refrain from resorting to any form of undemocratic agitation.
The JAC also resolved to banish the accused and all his family members from the locality indefinitely, punishment fop anyone found harbouring the banished individuals, transferring all land and property in name of the accused to the deceased and his family.
The JAC also demanded life imprisonment for the accused, proper compensation for the family members of the deceased.
On the other hand, the SP of Bishnupur district, Sapam Hopson also appealed to the people to refrain from committing any unlawful activities in connection with the incident.
The criminal will be punished as per the laws of the land, he assured, urging the people to cooperate with the police and the Court.
