Imphal, January 10 2009:
Closure of the road on the western side of Raj Bhavan, popularly known as Governor's Road, every day from 4 pm since January 8 as part of the revised security arrangements after the last December 21 bomb attack by KCP (MC) at the Raj Bhavan has irked many traders and shopkeepers operating their business from this stretch of the road.
In this connection, a joint meeting of the traders and the shopkeepers was held in the afternoon today at MMCA building located along the Governor's Road.
The joint meeting decried the road closure as it has serious affected the daily business transaction and decided to approach the Governor with the request for lifting the restriction.
Talking to mediapersons after the meeting, Editor of Meeyam Saikhom Jugol, on behalf of all the other present, said the problems being faced by the traders and the shopkeepers as a consequent of the road closure should also be brought to the notice of the President, Prime Minister and the Home Minister of India.
Over and above taking recourse to various democratic agitations, legal assistance would also be sought if required, Jugol informed, adding that a memorandum would also be submitted to the authorities concerned for shifting away the official residence of the Governor elsewhere where it would convenient from the security point of view.
The closure of the road stretch has been effected after it was verbally announced by the police and no official order had been issued nor given any notification from the side of the police in this regard, he disclosed.
