Imphal, February 20 2012:
Several Chandel based civil society organisations have registered objection to the holding of repoll for the recently concluded Assembly election in Chandel district as proposed by the State CEO.
The Thadou Students' Association (TSA), Chandel district has urged the CEO of Manipur not to conduct re-poll in Chandel district.
A representation sent to the CEO in this regard by the TSA asked if there had been any hidden policy in conducting repoll when the polling officers were satisfied with the poll that was conducted on January 28 .
Citing that seven people were killed in poll related violence at Tampi polling station on January 28, the TSA posited that the proposal for repoll is an invitation of more bloodshed that would result in the loss of lives in Chandel district.
The mismatch of photographs taken at polling stations and photos in the photo electoral roll occurred at some polling stations due to technical problems.
Further, some polling officers could not operate the device.
Hence, the result of photo comparison process could not be a reasonable conclusion for the conduct of repoll, the TSA representation reasoned.
Meanwhile, the Kuki Chiefs' Association (KCA), Chandel district has also informed the CEO of Manipur its objection to the conduct of repoll in Chandel district.
The president of KCA, Chandel, Tongkholun Haokip contended that photo comparison process could not serve as a reasonable conclusion for holding of repoll.
It also reasoned that repoll would invite more bloodshed in Chandel district.
At the same time, the Chothe Tribe Union, Chandel has also registered its objection to the holding of repoll in Chandel district.
CTU President Rokungam Chothe has written to the CEO informing that the situation in Chandel post-election is still highly sensitive after seven people were killed in a poll violence on January 28 at Tampi polling station.
It cautioned the CEO that repoll in the district may lead to another human casualty.
