Imphal, September 14 2012:
Ahead of the 19th Livestock census, 2012 kits and input material have been handed over to district and sub-divisonal level officials at a simple function organised by Directorate of Veterinary & Animal Husbandry Services at its Sanjenthong office premises today.
The items were handed over to the District and Sub Divisional officers of the Department for further distribution to the enumerators.
As chief guest of the distribution programme, Commissioner (Veterinary & Animal Husbandry) L Lakher informed that Livestock Census has been a five yearly exercise in the country since 1919-20 and is aimed at extensive collection of information to facilitate planning and policy programme of the animal husbandry sector.
Highlighting that the 2007 livestock census for Manipur showed decline in the number of most of the livestock population, the Commissioner, however, stated that quinquennial record of the previous exercise also indicated increase in the value of crossbred cattle in Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal and Churachandpur districts with similar healthy trend regarding cross bred pig in Imphal West, Bishnupur and Thoubal districts.
Such a record illustrates impetus to livestock rearing and its contribution to the State's economy, said the chief guest who reiterated that reports of livestock census facilitate administrators, planners, veterinarians, scientists and various research organisations/institutions in the effective development of livestock and poultry sectors.
Informing that the State-wide exercise will be carried out from September 15 till October 15, followed by data verification, compilation, processing, data entry, etc., from October 16 onwards, L Lakher said livestock Census 2012 will involve 15 State level census officials, 21 district/sub-division level officials, 106 supervisors and 623 enumerators.
