Training on Orchids held

Kangpokpi, September 19 2017:
A three day entrepreneurship development training for women and youth on Orchids kicked off at FEEDS/KVK Hengbung yesterday .
The training programme was organised to inculcate awareness and knowledge of Orchids and its importance of preservation for livelihood among the hills people .
The training program was formally inaugurated by the Deputy Commissioner, Kangpokpi T Ranjit Singh in the presence of former Minister as well as president of FEEDS/KVK Hengbung Haokholet Kipgen and other officials .
Altogether, 100 women and youths from across the district of Kangpokpi and Senapati participated in the training program which was jointly organized by Indian Institute of Entrepreneurship (IIE), Government of India, Guwahati and Foundation for Environment and Economic Development Services (FEEDS) Hengbung .
T Ranjit Singh lauded the tireless and encouraging activities of FEEDS and its establishment of Orchid Research and development Centre (ORDC) at FEEDS Hengbung .
He also stressed on the potential of natural resources that bestowed the State and the opportunity to explore with economic benefits .
Project Organizer of FEEDS Hengbung Lallenmang Singsit underlined the importance of preserving Orchids for the livelihood of the people, more particularly the hill communities .
While highlighting few importance of Orchid, he said that Orchid is a unique resource of Manipur which have become an economically important plant for the hill people .
Singsit stated that the plant has become vulnerable and pushed to extinction owing to the ignorance of people and unscientific collection .
The plant comes in different shapes, colours, fragrance and some are considered medicinal and is in high demand in the flower market, he asserted .
“With an aim to identify such plant and preserve to promote its essence in various sectors, Orchid Research and Development Centre (ORDC) has been established by H Kipgen”, he added .
The project organizer further said that Indian Institute of Entrepreneurship (IIE) is the only official body which can impart entrepreneurial skills for the young farmers of the hill districts where cultivation, collection, preservation and trading of Orchid in the local, National and International market must be considered as a source for enterprise .
Faculty from IIE, Guwahati and IIE Manipur State Coordinator will be imparting knowledge and training to the participants and each trainees will be given a certificate by Indian Institute of Entrepreneur, Guwahati.
