Imphal, June 14:
Demanding adequate equipments required for their carrying out their work, job card holders of the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS) under Kodompokpi Gram Panchayat of Naoriya Pangkhanglakpa Assembly Constituency today ceased work and staged a Wakat Meepham at the community hall of Kodompokpi Mayai Leikai.
The protestors comprising mostly of womenfolk who are engaged in digging up the Lairam Marin canal covering a distance of around 10 kms in Kodompokpi area decried the failure of the authority concerned to procure the required equipments inspite of the fact that 40 percent of the fund has been set aside for the purpose and the work has already begun since June 11 .
Talking to mediapersons in this connection, Ashyaksha of Imphal West Zilla Parishad S Subhaschandra pointed out that out of the total fund sanctioned by the Government under NREGS, 60 percent is meant for labour charge and the remaining 40 percent for material component.
A meeting of the committee on implementation of NREGS held on May 2 last with Deputy Commissioner of Imphal West in the chair at the conference hall of Imphal West District Zilla Parishad had approved sanctioning of the requisite fund for procuring material components.
However, till date, the required equipments have not been procured and provided to the workers thereby causing lot of inconveniences to the implementation of the assigned work, the Adhyaksha added.
