Wangoo Laipham sets an example in reviving Govt school

Imphal, May 28 2017: Locals of Wangoo Laipham have revived the only Government upper primary school in the locality through a joint initiative.

The locals have sold their paddy fields to ensure every child of Wangoo Laipham have access to proper education.

Every full moon day, womenfolk would gather and play lottery.

The gathered amount would then be utilized to improve the school infrastructure.

These womenfolk have even named their group as Ningol Marup Purnima.

Between 2004 and 2005, Wangoo Laipham Upper Primary School did not have even a single student and teacher.

Under the initiative of the locals, the school now has 255 students.

"We would perform dance during Lai Haraoba and present Nupi Pala at other occasions.

The money donated to us during these events were used to give away loan at the interest rate of Rs 25 for every Rs 500 and Rs 50 for every Rs 1000. The interest we get were again used to play other monthly lotteries," informed L Chaoba, member of Ningol Marup Purnima.

L Amu Singh, president, School Management Committee of Wangoo Laipham Upper Primary School said that the fund contributed by Ningol Marup Purnima is used for improving the school infrastructure and to pay the teachers and chowkidar.

Every family of Wangoo Laipham send their children only to Wangoo Laipham Upper Primary School.

"In order make the school fully functional, the locals gave away one pari of paddy field on loan for which we got Rs 95,000.My son Manimohan sold his portions of paddy field and donated Rs 3 lakh to the school.

The amount all put together is given away as loan.

The Pradhan would also extend his help when there is shortage of money to pay the teachers and chowkidar.

Even the school teachers would donate Rs 1000 each," L Amu Singh added.

The school has just four classrooms so building of Wangoo Laipham uneducated Employed Youth Organisation is being utilised as classrooms.

Parents from other adjoining localities have also started sending their children to Wangoo Laipham Upper Primary School.

Uniforms for the students are stitched by the members of Ningol Marup Purnima.

Since the school has upto class 8, students continue their studies at Wangoo Laipham Government aided High School.

The locals expressed hope that the State Government would provide adequate teachers and computer sets considering the interest of the students.
