Transporters urge

Different transporters' bodies have urged the All Manipur Tribal Students' Union Manipur (ATSUM) to relax their proposed NH blockade starting October 21 midnight considering the possible impact which may give to Ningol Chakkouba festival.
Speaking at a press conference held at Moirangkhom today, All Manipur Petroleum Tankers Drivers Union president Y Bhupenchandra Ghosh said that Ningol Chakkouba is one of the biggest festivals of the State and the proposed blockade would not only serve as a reason for unnecessary price rise but also dampen the spirit of the people during this festive season.
On the other hand, he also strongly condemned the act of the miscreants who opened fire on a cement laden truck injuring the handyman of the vehicle, identified as Konjengbam Roshan at Khambiron yesterday.
He urged all concerned not to give unneccesary harrasment to drivers and handymen who are working in the service of the people on the highways.
Regarding the bad road condition of the highway, Bhupenchandra said that they had submitted memoranda to the State Government and the authority concerned on many occasions but no postive response has been given till date.
He also informed the reporters that the transporters would head to New Delhi soon to apprise the matter to the Union Transport Minister.
The press conference was also attended by National Highway 37 and 53 Truck Owners Association president Kh Inaobi, Bimol Singh of Inter-State Bus Association, All Manipur Petroleum Transporters Association general secretary A Deben.
Kh Inaoba said that transporters are set to conduct a debating competition on the role of security forces in guarding the National Highways and the problems faced by transporters on these roads.
