Imphal, May 08 2019:
The locals of Lamdeng extended the ban on disposal of waste material at Lamdeng Solid Waste Management plant indefinitely and cautioned that the ban will remain until a proper drainage system is constructed and the authority concerned heed their other demands as well.
Speaking to media persons during a protest in front of the plant today, the locals of Lamdeng stated that they have intensified their stand against the disposal of solid waste in the plant at Lamdeng after coming across the statement of the local MLA in the local dailies which mentioned that a negotiation had been brought with the locals of Lamdeng and that the disposal of solid waste will resume from today morning onwards.
The locals rebuffed the report as totally false and baseless and clarified that no such negotiations occurred between the MLA and the locals of the surrounding villages during the MLA's visit along with a team of MAHUD, PDA and MSPDCL official yesterday.
The locals further clarified that they are not against the disposal of solid waste material at the plant if the authority concerned looks after the hardships faced by the people due to the foul smelling liquid which comes out of the treatment plant and which often spreads into the surrounding paddy fields.
They then appealed to the authority concerned to construct a proper drainage system to channel the wastes coming out from the treatment plant and to ensure proper treatment of the solid waste dumped inside the plant.
The locals also alleged that due to the failure to treat the solid wastes which have been dumped since the past one or two years, the people of the area are suffering from various kind of skin diseases.
Clarifying that only dumping of solid waste in the solid waste management plant is prohibited and no kind of disturbances has been posed to the treatment of solid waste inside the complex, the locals appealed to the authority concerned to ensure proper treatment of the solid wastes which are already in the complex in large quantity, before dumping further solid waste in the area.
On the other hand RK Mudhorjit, Plant Manager of the site, stated that the volume of solid waste dumped at the plant is much higher than they can treat in a day.
The average solid waste treatment per day is 60 tones but more than 110 to 120 metric tonne of solid waste are dumped per day at Lamdeng Solid Waste Management plant, he said, adding that it will take more than 1 year for the solid waste which are already dumped inside the plant to be properly treated.
