Thoubal, January 04 2020:
Stressing on the role played by radio in a democratic country, ex-Chief Minister Okram Ibobi has stated that there is no place for authoritarian-style administration and strong-arm tactics in a democratic set-up.
He was speaking at the 3rd foundation day of FM 91.2 Diamond Radio Station, Khongjom, which is the first Community Radio Service (CRS) in Manipur, held at Khongjom Bazaar community hall today.
In a democracy, ultimate power lies with the people.
It will not be right to assume the people of Manipur as fools just because they are silent.
There is nothing which can suppress the strength of the people if they decide to rise up, he added.
Pointing out that radio plays an important role in spreading news and message all over the country, the ex-CM lauded the community radio service which is acting as the eyes and ears of the people.
On the other hand, Diamond Radio chairman Moirangthem Hemanta said that the listener base of the radio has climbed to around 4 lakh people now and explained that the country has a total of 262 CRS and three of them are in Manipur, with Diamond Radio being the first in the State.
He continued that the youths can easily listen to the radio on their phones or smartphones but the elderlies can sometimes find it difficult to listen to the radio.
As such, Diamond Radio constantly distributes radio sets to radio enthusiasts and orphan homes as well as through lottery system.
Till date, Diamond Radio has given out around 1000 radio sets to children homes, school libraries, rehabilitation centres etc.
He further explained that many of the restrictions or difficulties present in AIR, are not there in such CRS and as such, through Diamond Radio, the people have a platform where they can showcase their talents or channel their voice.
Wangkhem A/C MLA Keisham Meghachandra was also present at the event.
As a part of the foundation day observation, radio sets were distributed to various orphan homes, disabled persons etc.
A lottery was also organised with radio sets as prizes.
