"Heavy school bags impact children's mind and body"

Overwhelmingly heavy bags not only strain children's shoulders, they also affect them mentally.
While the burden of the books strains their shoulders and affect them physically, the load also stress their minds making their learning at school dull, said Manipur Commission for Protection of Child Rights Chairperson Sumatibala today.
Speaking at the State level workshop on the theme "The issue of heavy weight of school bags" at Lamyanba Shanglen, she said that carrying heavy bags has serious effects on children's health as they may suffer from severe spinal deformities.
She lauded that the State's Government's 'No School Bag Day' is a right intervention and initiative to ease the burden of children, improve their health and make learning fun.
The workshop was held to bring out solutions and recommendation that will be sent to State Government and Centre, she said.
NPCR North East Cell Senior Technical Expert Paresh Shah said that the NCERT prescribed text books of Class 1 & II each weigh about 1.5 kg, Class III, IV and V weigh about 3 kg each, Class VI and VII weigh 4 kg, Class VIII and IX - 4.5 kg, and Class X - 5 kg .
Schools should not prescribe extra books not recommended or prescribed by the NCERT, Shah said.
The workshop was organsied by NCPCR and MCPCR.
