Hindu devotees celebrate Krishna Janmashtami

Hindu devotees in the State thronged Sri Sri Govindajee Temple, Mahabali Hanuman Thakur Temple and ISKCON Temple with offerings and prayed to Lord Krishna for blessings on Krishna Janmashtami today.
The momentum of the occasion picked up in the evening with large numbers of Hindu devotees packed the premises of the said temples although lesser devotees were seen in the morning and afternoon.
Youths and children bought toys from the stalls which were opened along the roadsides near the temples and added colour to the celebration.
On the auspicious day, prize distribution function for the 1st Sri Krishna Janmashtami Essay Writing and Painting Competitions was also held at the premise of ISKCON Temple today wherein Patsoi AC MLA AK Mirabai, former VC of MU Professor H Tombi Singh and ISKCON's Guru Bhaktivyasatirtha Swami graced the function as chief guest, president and guest of honour respectively.
The essay writing competition (open) organized by ISKCON Youth Forum was held on the topic "Decline in Educational System of Manipur: Problems and Remedies" while the painting competition was held on the theme "Saving Ecosystems in Manipur" on August 26 at BIM Higher Secondary School (opposite ISKCON Temple), Ghari.
K Anirudhha Sharma of Vishal Law Institute, Ungalei Longjam of Kindergarten Montessori and Delina Soubam of Extra Edge School received the first, second and third prizes respectively for the essay writing competition.
In the category I (class V to VII) of the painting competition, Martin Tongbram of Pitambara English School, M Thoithoiba Singh of Regular English School and L Abhijit Singh of Bethel English School received the first, second and third positions while Venish Keisham of Pitambara English School, Telen Khaidem of DAV Public School and Y Udoynanda of Heritage Convent were adjudged the top three positions in the category II (Class VIII to X).
Meanwhile, Shri Krishna Janmashtami was also celebrated at Shri Shri Radha Krishna Mandir, Dwarika Village, Leimakhong from yesterday.
Vice Chairman of State Disaster Management Authority, Government of Manipur Adim Panmei, Gorkha political leader and social worker Kharga Tamang and joint secretary of Leimakhong Bazar Authority Shyam Dahal took part in the celebration.
The villagers and devotees of the entire Leimakhong surrounding area participated in the celebration.
Radha Krishna Mandir was decorated with a lights and colours.
The villagers worshipped and held different types of religious programmes.
Bhajan, Kirtan and dance programmes were held the whole night, said Rajen Thapa, Publicity secretary of AMGSU.
Lord Krishna is said to be the eighth incarnation of Lord Vishnu.
The day of Lord Krishna's birth is considered to be an auspicious event for Hindu devotees across the world.
It is celebrated as Krishna Janmashtami or Gokulashtami and is one of the biggest Hindu religious festival, said Adim Panmei Vice Chairman, State Disaster Management Authority, Govt of Manipur.
Shyam Dahal said that Krishna Janmashtami is calculated by following the Hindu Lunisolar calendar; according to it Sri Krishna was born in the month of Shravana on the eighth day at midnight.
So, according to the Hindu calendar, Janmashtami is marked on Krishna Paksha's eighth day in Bhadra month which is also called the Ashtami.
This generally falls in August or September every year, he said.
Damar Magar chairman of Dwarika village and Biren Baral were also presented on the occasion.
