Imphal, November 21:
Saying that MEELAL has reached an agreement with the parent organisation of a group opposing use of Meetei Mayek on vehicles and sign boards, MEELAL has cautioned all the vehicle drivers, owners and the Imphal-Churachandpur Transport Association that it would ban any vehicle plying along Imphal-Churachandpur route if Meetei Mayek number plates are not used.
A statement issued by MEELAL clarified that its activities are not guided by any personal agenda but by the dedication to develop the indigenous language in accordance to the wish of people.
It further noted that burning of Meetei Mayek text books and blackening of sign-boards written in Meetei Mayek were acts of uncivilized, mean people.
A high level meeting of MEELAL with major representatives of Kuki groups of Churachandpur district and other tribal leaders was held today at a place in Imphal West during which the issue of Meetei Mayek was deliberated at length.
Saying that MEELAL stands for all the communities of Manipur, it asked the Churachandpur District Students' Union if they would be able to account for the losses caused by confiscating and burning Meetei Mayek books from schools and book stores.
Taking serious note of such disruptive activities, the meeting unanimously agreed to ban any vehicle without Meetei Mayek number plates and other words in the indigenous script, conveyed the statement.
