Sawombung protests against alleged staged encounters

Asserting that A Amujao and S David were killed in a staged encounter after their arrest, Meira Paibis of Sawombung staged a sit-in protest today at Sawombung Gate against the killing.
Protestors displayed placards reading, 'we condemn the killing of Amujao and David,' 'punish the guilty,' 'we condemn killing of innocents,' 'repeal AFSPA 1958 'protect the lives of the youth,' etc during the sit-in.
It may be mentioned that Amujao (17) was reportedly killed in an encounter with Imphal West district police commandos on January 27 at Khuman Lampak Palli.
Police also claimed to have recovered a pistol and a hand grenade from the possession of Amujao.
Amujao's mother, who also took part in the sit-in protest today said that her son was an innocent daily wage earner.
He left home on January 27 at around 4.30pm for his work place at North AOC.
Family members supposed that he was staying at his work place when he did not return the next day.
However, they were dumbfounded when they got information from Amujao's employer that he was not there at his work place on January 29, she said.
His lifeless body was later found lying at RIMS Morgue.
Amujao's maternal aunt Ito said that Amujao was killed after being tortured brutally while registering her condemnation of the police action in placing weapons on the dead body's possession.

Ito further demanded that the Government should enquire into the matter and bring justice.
Sanasam (O) Bimola, mother of S David has admitted that her son was once a cadre of a militant outfit.
Since he returned to the mainstream, he had never maintained any relationship with any UG group.
He lived a normal life after getting married.
She further lamented how her two-month old grandson and her young daughter-in-law would live their lives.
Sanasam David (25) son of (L) Samu of Sawombung Gate was killed in a reported encounter with a combined team of Imphal East and Imphal West districts police commandos at Langthabal on February 4. Meanwhile, David's mother recalled that her son went to 2nd MR to submit his documents relating to his recruitment in the 31 AR on February 4.Till 9am of the day, he communicated with the family through phone.
Since his mobile phone was kept in switch-off mode, family members could not contact him later.
Before this incident, Bimola also recalled an incident when a team of police commandos went to their house enquiring about a person by the name of Anand.
