Though there are no further reports of violence at Dimapur following the mob attack at Wungram Colony yesterday in which over 50 houses were set aflame and damaged, tension is still running high in the commercial capital of Nagaland.
Speaking to The Sangai Express, sources from Dimapur said that to pre-empt the outbreak of further violence and chaos, prohibitory order under CrPC 144 has been imposed not only at Wungram Colony but also in other areas including the surroundings of the Ceasefire Monitoring Cell office at Dimapur.
On the other hand, situation is reportedly normal in Kohima.
When contacted by The Sangai Express this evening the SP of Kohima police said that the violence at Wungram Colony was a spontaneous outburst and added that necessary security steps have been taken up to ensure the protection of the Tangkhul community settled at the capital of Kohima.
Home Minister of Nagaland Government Thenucho, the Chief Secretary, DGP and other top ranking civil and police officials visited Wungram Colony today for a spot assessment, said the source.
Interestingly, though a Cabinet meeting of the DAN Government was held this evening in connection with the incident, no an official statement was issued.
The police too has not come out with an official statement.
Taking note of the damages caused at the Colony and the displacement of people, the Indian Red Cross Society, Nagaland galvanised its resources and distributed relief material to the women folk and children who have been provided shelter at the Nagaland Armed Police training centre at Chumukedima.
Some of the refugees have reportedly left the training centre to stay with relatives, added the source.
Our Ukhrul correspondent reports that following the mob attack yesterday, the Tangkhul Naga Long convened a meeting at its conference hall today to discuss the matter.
Taking cognizance of the suffering faced by the people who have been rendered homeless, the meeting decided to form a Committee and extend its help to the affected people.
Help, either in cash or kind would be sought from the public to provide relief material to the affected people, added our Correspondent.
In a positive development civil organisations from the Tangkhul and the Sema communities today held a joint meeting in Dimapur, reports NNN.
The meeting was also attended by representatives of Dimapur District administration.
The meeting resolved that they will urge the Nagaland Government to address the plights of the affected people.
It has been confirmed today that altogether 39 houses were burnt while nineteen vehicles (all four wheelers) and a scooter were engulfed by the fire.It has also been said that properties worth of crores of rupees had been destroyed by the fire.
About Rs 2 lakh in cash was burnt in the incident, according to reports.
