International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking : Many bat for drug free, clean society

The International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking was observed at the Maharaja Chandrakirti Auditorium, Hafta Kangjeibung, Palace Compound, Imphal East today.
The theme of this year's observance is "Health for Justice, Justice for Health".
The observance was attended by Agriculture Minister V Hangkhanlian, Social Welfare Minister Nemcha Kipgen, Education Minister Thokchom Radheshyam Singh, Principal Secretary (Social Welfare) V Vumlunmang IAS, and president in-charge of Coalition Against Drugs and Alcohol (CADA) as chief guest, president and guests of honour respectively.
Speaking on the occasion, Th Radheshyam Singh emphasised on the importance of taking proper care of drug users and treating them with love, care and understanding to guide them to the right direction.

They must be given proper awareness for their return to normal life.
Collective efforts of the Government and people can prevent youth from abusing drugs, he added.
Social Welfare Minister Nemcha Kipgen said that International Day Against Drugs Abuse and Illicit Trafficking is observed internationally every year.
The day is observed not only to give awareness about the danger of drug abuse but also to encourage Government to work out plans and policies and implement them in close co-ordination with NGOs, she said.
Drug abuse is common among school dropout children, she said and urged parents to advise their children on the devastating effects of drug abuse on health and society.
For a drug free State, Department of Social welfare has opened twenty "Integrated Rehabilitation Centres" for drug users.
Many of the addicted persons are now rehabilitated and reformed with the help of these centres, she said.
A draft policy on drug policy is now in the final stage, she added.
Staff and dignitaries from different departments and students of different schools participated in the observance.
Prizes were distributed to the winners of State level painting competition which was held on June 20 .
