Woman found strangled to death

Imphal, April 05 2013 : A woman of around 32 years of age was found strangled to death and abandoned at Wangkhei Loumanbi Loukon under Irilbung Police Station around 1: 30 pm today.

The deceased woman has been identified as Ningombam Satyabhama, d/o N Tomba of Kakwa Laishram Selungba Leikai.

She was working on a project under Dr Dhruba, Head of Department of Pathology, RIMS as a Junior Research Fellow.

She was not a doctor or a paramedical staff or a regular employee of RIMS.

The lifeless body of Satyabhama was come across by some local women who went there to pluck vegetables.

She was found lying with her back on the ground clad in a red phanek and a bright coloured shirt.

The phanek was rolled up above her knees, thus revealing her inner wear, a red panty.

There was also a scarf around her neck with which she had been strangulated.

It appeared that she had been strangulated so tightly that both her eyes were protruding from their sockets and her tongue sticking out.

The colour of her face too had been darkened.

Though the hands and legs seem normal, the body has started to decompose, indicating that she may have been killed and left there for the last couple of days.

The police are of the opinion that the woman was killed somewhere and later abandoned at Wangkhei Loumanbi Loukon as there were no signs of force movements around the area.

A lady's hand bag, probably belonging to the victim, was found lying near the body along with another medium size carry bag.

The lady's bag contained cosmetic items, ID card issued by Sekharjit, Director of RIMS, driving license, testing kit for pregnancy, three passport size photographs of herself and another passport size photograph of an unknown man.

The other carry bag was filled with clothes and some documents.

As soon as the news spread, SP of Imphal East Angam Kamei Romanus, Additional SP, DSP and other police officials rushed in to the spot for necessary investigation.

The body was later picked up by the police and deposited at the mortuary of JNIMS for post-mortem examination.

Meanwhile, talking to Hueiyen Lanpao, N Tomba, father of the deceased woman, informed that after her daughter went to her office at around 9:30 am on April 4, she did not return home that day.

Thinking that she may have been eloped with her lover, the family waited for the next day for the confirmation.

But there was no confirmation.

So today, a missing report was registered with the Kakwa Police Station and in the afternoon the news of the death of her daughter was received.

When family members of Satyabhama inquired her close friends about her possible whereabouts, it was known that she (Satyabhama) had frequent telephonic conversation with two persons, namely James and Dasarat of Nongmeibung.

The locals of Satyabhama went to Nongmeibung in search of the duo, but could not find them.

They even rang up them on their mobile numbers, but the phones were switched off.

The agitated locals also blocked the Indo-Nyanmar road at Kakwa and broke the wind shields of a passenger vehicle.

Blocking of the road along with burning of tyres and woods continued till the filing of this report.

Meanwhile, Along with forming a JAC over the killing of Ningombam Satyabhama during a public meeting convened at Bo Lampak in Kakwa today, an indefinite Manipur Bandh has been called with effect from 6am tomorrow.

Annuncing this in a statement jointly signed by its Convenor L Kiran and Co-convenor L Nilakumar, the JAC has demanded the State government to bring out the culprits involved in the killing of Satyabhama.

The JAC has also appealed to all the CSOs and Meira paibis in the State to support the bandh.

Media, medical and religious functions would be exempted from the purview of the bandh, the statement added.
