Shillong, April 30 2014:
The proscribed Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) has alleged that the power crisis in Meghalaya is a planned conspiracy of the government of Meghalaya in order to make way for the so called uranium mining to generate electricity.
"This policy of the government towards Meghalaya is to make Hynniewtrep (the Khasis and Jantias) and Achik (Garos) starve so that they live a poor life.
The Indian Government wants to take away uranium, electricity, coal, land and everything else that would make the lives of Hynniewtrep enrich.
The HNLC would never tolerate anything related to uranium mining and people encouraging uranium mining will be dealt with severely.
This current crisis is designed in order to suit the personal motives of the government," the HNLC stated in a press communiqué today.
According to the HNLC, the load shedding in recent times has affected everyone including newspapers, hospitals, banks, school, water supply and other important services being the most affected, the HNLC said.
The state has two hydroelectric projects - Umiam, a storage project, and Myntdu-Leska, a run-of-the-river (ROR) Project generating around 186 MW and 126 MW respectively.
The state requirement for power is over 600MW.The state has to purchase power from outside to meet the demand.
The total outstanding dues against power purchase from 11 companies have touched Rs 473.85 crore as on February 28 last.
NEEPCO has the highest outstanding due against power purchase from Meghalaya which has nearly touched Rs 364 crore, followed by power grid corporation of India limited whose due is Rs 28.39 crore, followed by NTPC at Rs 24.65 crore and national hydro power corporation at Rs.21.23 crore, the HNLC stated.
"The entire Hynniewtrep is being taken for a ride by the government of Meghalaya and the government of India.
We may remain silent but the moment we strike, it would be an eye-opener to all concerned," the HNLC stated.
