Imphal, May 05 2014:
A 10-day workshop on Manipuri Terminology Building began today at the Multipurpose Hall of SCERT, Lamphelpat under the aegis of Directorate of Language Planning and Implementation, Govt of Manipur.
Experts including University professors in Physics, Chemistry, Botany, Zoology, Economics, Geography and Manipuri language took part in the workshop.
L Mahabi, Joint Director, Directorate of Language Planning and Implementation said the workshop aims towards imparting education upto graduate level in Manipuri medium, as per provisions of the Manipur Official Language Act, 1979 .
Provisions made for, Manipuri, which is also included in the 8th Schedule of the Constitution of India, in the MOL Act, 1979 are fairly not implemented.
Any change in the medium of Higher Education essentially necessitates the production of University level textbooks and reference books.
Translation works in Manipuri such as textbooks up to Graduate level and reference books would render excellent service for the effective implementation of official language scheme.
However, evolution of technical terms in Manipuri and their standardisation are multidimensional and extensive which required deep and serious study and deliberation.
Hence the workshop, Mahabi said.
