A team of young Taekwondo athletes from Chandel district has brought glory to the state by winning five gold medals at the 5 th India Progressive Cup National Open Taekwondo Championship 2025, held in Howrah, Kolkata, West Bengal.

All five gold medals were secured by students from the Martial Arts Taekwondo Club, Chandel, who overcame numerous odds to make their mark at the national level.
The gold medallists in their respective categories were Tholung Bungwarson Lamkang (Pee Wee), TH Alana Christine Rhingbortin Monsang (Cadet), Tholung Caroline Lamkang (Senior), Galingwang Malangmei (Junior), and Rengjoyson Shilshi (Sub-Junior) .
The journey to the podium was far from easy.
The team faced significant financial constraints, with students and supporters running from pillar to post to arrange funds for travel and participation.
Some children were even forced to drop out due to the physical and emotional toll of rigorous training.
Nevertheless, coach Teresa's steadfast commitment and the unwavering spirit of her athletes saw them through.
This achievement highlights not only the remarkable potential of youth in Chandel but also the urgent need for greater support from authorities, civil society organisations, and sports enthusiasts.
Despite the evident talent and enthusiasm for sport in the district, infrastructural support and sponsorship remain minimal.
The success of the Chandel team is being hailed as a major milestone and a hopeful sign for the future of Taekwondo in the region.
The entire state of Manipur, and Chandel in particular, has expressed immense pride in coach Teresa and her team of champions, whose hard-earned victory is an inspiring testament to what can be achieved through passion and perseverance.
