18th MAKA State Karate Championship underway

Imphal, May 09 2026: The 18th edition of MAKA State Karate Championship kicked off today at SAI-STC, Khuman Lampak Imphal under the aegis of the Manipur Amateur Karate Do Association (MAKA).

The championship that will see 264 athletes compete for top honours was formally opened in the presence of Mayengbam Veto, Director YAS as chief guest; Hanshi Kirankumar Thangjam, president MAKA as functional president; Ngangom Tejkumar, Retd Director Prosecution and Legal Advisor MAKA and Angom Johnson, joint secretary and Manipur Olympic Association as guests of honour.

Speaking at the occasion, M Veto spoke highly of the gifted State athletes who have been continuously shining in National and international competitions.

He said that sports can be roughly classified in three groups - sports where the.

youths are excelling, sports that have huge potential, and culturally linked indigenous contact sports.

The Government is giving due importance to all the groups, he said.

"Based on our livelihood and physique, we have huge potential in contact sports," he said while also stressing on the need for revising incentives given to State athletes.
