Imphal, March 18 2026: The 1st edition of Rajkumar Sanajaoba Memorial U-20 Chess Tournament 2026 organised by the Kanglei Chess Academy kicked off this morning at Yaiskul Sanakhwaton Kollup under the aegis of the Manipur State Chess Association.

The tournament was formally opened in the presence of RK Priyokumar, Retd Principal; Sanasam Umananda, organising president of Kanglei Chess Academy and Hemam Jogendro, vice president, Manipur State Chess Association as presidium members.

The opening day saw 26 athletes registering wins in the first round while 2 shared spoils following a draw.

Rated player Dayanand Thoudam secured his first round victory against unrated player Laishram Nency as rated player Mangai Elangbam got the better of unrated player Lamnganbi Ayekpam and rated player Punsiba Maisnam beat unrated Lamyanba Ayekpam.

Rated player Oinam Khelemba meanwhile beat unrated player Leirikhomba Mangang as rated player Lemba Sougaijam beat unrated player Lingelleima Thokchom, rated player Lanchenba Ngairangbam beat unrated player Loitongbam Mayol, rated player Jonex Nandeibam beat unrated player Magnus Chingsubam and rated player Williamba Moirangthem beat unrated player Nelson Potshangbam.

Lanheiba Loitongbam (Rating 1494) meanwhile was the only rated player who suffered opening round loss today as he went down to unrated player Nelson Sorokhaibam.

Rated players Stanley Meethoiba Lourembam, Thounaojam Dupachandra, Dinesh Chabungbam and Prichard Elangbam also kicked off their campaign on winning notes.

Unrated players- Aadeep Basnet, Anish Senjam, Roosevelt Thiyam, Azril Laishram, Sirius Septen Thiyam, Celia Yambem, Taison Laishram, Thounaojam Favein, Ira Shankar, Uhenbi Ningthemcha, Veeral Mongjam and Wangthoi Ningthemcha were also able to record wins on the first day.

Lairenmayum Kanishkar and Yaiphaba Yumnam on the other hand played out a draw to share a half point apiece.

The tournament will resume on March 20 with the second round beginning at 9 am and the third round tentatively commencing from 1 pm later in the day.
