ABVP Manipur State celebrates "National Students' Day" with football tournament

Celebrating "National Students' Day", ABVP Manipur State Khelo Bharat has kicked off a 2-day State level 9-a-sidemen's knock-out football tournament at IRI Turf Ground, Maibam Leikai Heinoukhongnembi in Imphal West district today.
The tournament was formally launched in the presence of Dr Th David Singh, Head of the Department of Chemistry at NIT Manipur; Naorem Roshan Singh, international footballer currently playing for Bengaluru FC; and Dr Laishram Santosh Singh, Associate Professor in the Department of Physical Education and Sports Science at Manipur University, Canchipur as the presidium members.
Altogether 16 teams representing various clubs, colleges, and universities are participating in the tournament, said tournament coordinator in a press release.
Speaking at the event, Dr Th David highlighted that Khelo Bharat is a vital initiative by ABVP aimed at promoting sports, especially traditional Bharatiya sports, yoga, and fitness among the youth.
The programme focuses on enhancing physical fitness, teamwork, and discipline in young individuals, he added.
Naorem Roshan meanwhile emphasized the importance of tournaments like this in nurturing players and boosting their performance.
He encouraged all participants to engage actively, stating that participation was far more valuable than merely winning the game.
Dr Laishram Santosh also elaborated on the broader vision behind the tournament, noting that it seeks to transform India into a global sporting powerhouse by developing sports at every level, from grassroots to elite, and integrating sports into the cultural fabric of Indian society.
The tournament, held under the aegis of Khelo Bharat, reflects a strong commitment to fostering sporting excellence and holistic development among youth in Manipur and beyond, the tournament coordinator added.
