NSD celebration at MU concludes with "Sundays on Cycle" event

The Department of Physical Education and Sports Science (PESS), Manipur University, Canchipur, successfully organized the "Sundays on Cycle" event today as part of the National Sports Day (NSD) 2025 celebrations.
The programme conducted in collaboration with the Fit India Campaign Committee, Fit India Club, and the National Service Scheme (NSS) Cell, Manipur University began at 7.30 am from the Traffic Island, Manipur University.
The programme was graced by several eminent personalities, including: Prof N Lokendra, Vice-Chancellor, Manipur University as chief guest; Ngangbam Soniya, Olympian (London Olympics 2012) & Arjuna Awardee as special guest; Prof M Premjit, Registrar, Manipur University; Prof L Thambal Singh, Head, Department of PESS; T Shantikumar Singh, Controller of Examinations as guest of honours and Prof Ch Ibohal Singh, Dean of Students' Welfare as functional president.
The event commenced with a felicitation ceremony, where volunteers from the NSS Cell honored the dignitaries.
A special memento was presented by the Vice-Chancellor to Ngangbam Soniya in recognition of her achievements as an Olympian.
To symbolically promote environmental sustainability, the dignitaries also participated in a plant- watering activity, marking the beginning of the function.
Ngangbam Soniya expressed her gratitude to Manipur University for the honour and highlighted the need for greater public participation and support to elevate sports at the National and international levels.
Prof N Lokendra Singh, in his speech, underlined the importance of health in building a prosperous society.
He stressed that a fit nation is a strong Nation, and that collective efforts like "Sundays on Cycle" contribute towards the vision of a Viksit Bharat by 2047.He also shared the university's aspiration to become a single-use plastic-free campus, calling for collective cooperation.
The cycling event was flagged off by T Shantikumar Singh, Controller of Examinations, with the Vice-Chancellor leading the ride, followed by dignitaries, faculty members, students, and cycling enthusiasts from across the State.
A total of 200 cyclists participated in the event, demonstrating the collective spirit of health and fitness.
RIMS wraps up NSD with Cycle Rally
The Regional Institute of Medical Sciences, Imphal also wrapped up its three-day National Sports Day celebration with a cycle rally as part of series of event.
The celebration featured Badminton, Yoga sessions, and a fitness talk, all aimed at encouraging physical well being and promoting active lifestyles among the RIMS community.
The cycle rally was flagged off by Prof G Sunila Kumar Sharma, Director of RIMS from the RIMS Jubilee Hall and covered Sanakeithel, thangmeiband, Kangla, Uripok before culminating at the Jubilee hall, said Media Cell of RIMS in a statement.
Prof N Sanjib, Medical Superintendent of RIMS; Prof Laishram Rajesh Singh, Dean (Academics) also actively participated in the rally along with Heads of Departments, faculty members, staff, and students, spreading the message of fitness, health and unity, it said.
