Imphal, September 06 2025: The Manipur women's team who finished runners up at the 9th National Wheelchair Basketball Championship organised by the Wheelchair Basketball Federation of India were accorded a warm reception as they landed here at Bir Tikendrajit International Airport this morning.

Director Information and Public Relation, Ngangom Uttam; State Commissioner for Persons with Disability in Manipur, Waikhom Birahari; and Deputy Director Social Welfare Department, L Dhaneshwor led in receiving the runners up team.

Addressing the felicitation event, the Deputy Director of the Social Welfare Department Uttam expressed immense joy and pride over the state team's achievement in the National Wheelchair Basketball Championship, which began in Gwalior on September 1.State Commissioner for Persons with Disability in Manipur, Waikhom Birahari, lauded the team's exemplary performance against strong opponents, highlighting their determination and hard work despite limited resources.

Waikhom Birahari expressed confidence that with proper training facilities, equipment, and support, the state team would be unbeatable.

Team captain, Chakpram Lokeshori, attributed their success to a 'dream run' in the championship, where they won five consecutive matches before losing to Maharashtra in the final.

She echoed the commissioner's sentiments, emphasizing the need for better equipment, training facilities, and financial security to further elevate the team's performance.

The state team comprised talented players, including Irengbam Ritu, Maimom Gunibala, Nahakpam Ratana, Thongbam Sangita, Mangte Jermiah Kom, Laishram Linda, and Anjira Laskar, under the guidance of coach Md Yunus Khan, physiotherapist Longjam Bidyasagar, and manager L Amarendra Sharma.
