DYAS observes State Players' Day

The
State Players' Day, organised
by the Department of Youth
Affairs and Sports (DYAS)
was observed today at Main
Stadium, Khuman Lampak.
The function was at-
tended by Chief Minister O
Ibobi Singh, PHED Labour
and Employment Minister I
Hemochandra and Consult-
ant to Government of
Manipur Dr RK Nimai
(Retd IAS) as presidium
members.
As a part of the observ-
ance, players from Khuman
Lampak Residential Coach-
ing Centre, National Sports
Academy (NSA) and SAI-
SAG, Imphal ran a
marathon which was
flagged off from Khuman
Lampak Main Stadium and
went through Imphal city.
Speaking at the function
Chief Minister Ibobi stated
that ''Manipur occupies a
prominent place in the field
of games and sports in the
Country.
The State has pro-
duced a number of National
and International players in-
cluding one Padma Bhusan,
three Padma Shris, 13 Ol-
ympians, 15 Arjuna
awardees, two Rajiv Gan-
dhi Khel Ratna awardees,
one Donacharya and one
Dhyanchand awardee.
The
State has also produced one
medallist in Olympics, 16
medallists in Asian Games
and 27 medallists in Com-
mon Wealth Games.''
''During the recently held
South Asian Games at
Guwahati and Shillong,
Manipur clinched 22 gold,
5 silver medals in different
disciplines'', he added.
He said that, ''The Youth
Affairs and Sports Depart-
ment has been extending
financial assistance to
Manipur Olympic Associa-
tion, State and District
Associations to promote
games and sports in the
State and also to participate
in the National level tourna-
ments''.
It may be mention that,
Manipur has been observ-
ing February 25 as Players'
Day since 2000 after
Manipur clinched the over-
all team champion's title in
the 5th National Games
hosted by the State and won
the Raja Valendra Singh
Trophy.
