State 9-A-Side Men's Knockout Football Tournament begins

Imphal, July 08 2025:
To commemorate National Students' Day, a two-day State-Level 9-A-Side Men's Knockout Open Football Tournament, organised by Khelo Bharat, ABVP Manipur State, began on Tuesday at IRI Turf Ground, Maibam Leikai Heinoukhongnembi, Imphal West.
The opening ceremony was attended by dignitaries including Dr Th David Singh, head of Chemistry at NIT Manipur; international footballer Naorem Roshan Singh of Bengaluru FC; and Dr Laishram Santosh Singh, associate professor of Physical Education and Sports Science at Manipur University.
16 teams comprising players from clubs, colleges, and universities took part in the two-day tournament.
Each team fielded 12 players in the fast-paced 9-a-side format.
The ceremony featured a traditional Langyal Phee welcome for the dignitaries.
Addressing the participants, Dr David Singh emphasised the role of Khelo Bharat in promoting physical fitness, discipline, and teamwork through traditional Indian sports and yoga.
Naorem Roshan Singh highlighted the importance of participation over victory, encouraging players to give their best.
Dr Santosh Singh spoke of the initiative's broader vision to develop sports from grassroots to elite level and embed them into India's cultural framework.
Organisers expressed gratitude to all participants and guests for their support in making the tournament a success.
