Koijam Athoiba sets new National freestyle record, bags best swimmer title

Koijam Athoiba scripted a new height in swimming for Manipur as he set a new National record in 100 m freestyle competition on the way to his third gold medal at the 41 st Sub-Junior National Swimming Championships held in Bangalore.

Athoiba was also adjudged best swimmer at the championships as the State boys' team emerged champions and overall runners up with 6 gold, 6 silver and 1 bronze medals including 1 in diving competition.

Having clinched two gold medals, one apiece in the 200 m freestyle and 100 m butterfly stroke competitions, Koijam Athoiba clocked 58.59 seconds in the 100 m freestyle competition to create the new National record.

Athoiba sealed his first gold medal yesterday in the 200 m freestyle competition, recording the best time of 2 minutes 9.63 seconds before securing his second gold medal in the 100 m butterfly stroke event with a time of 1:01.85.Laitonjam Pumhen bagged a silver taking 1:05.06 in the 100 m butterfly stroke event.

He also won a silver medal in the 200 m individual medley with a time of 2:28.74 (two minutes and 28.74 seconds) as compatriot Nahakpam Hemansu bagged the gold with a time of 2:23.08 .

Nahakpam Hemansu also won a bronze medal in the 100 m backstroke event with a time of 1:08.90 .

Athoiba also went on to win 4x50 m medley relay competition silver along with Mangalsana, Pieterson and Pumhen as they completed the course in 1:57.58 to finish second.

Yesterday, Meisnam Arindam recorded 1:15.08 to seal the sub-junior boys' 100 m breaststroke gold as compatriot Soram Pieterson settled for the silver medal with a time of 1:18.47 .

Arubam Baner, Hirom Bonson bag Diving medals

The day also saw Arubam Baner win a gold and Hirom Bonson win a silver medal in the 1 m springboard diving event.

Baner clinched the gold by fetching 255.04 points as compatriot Bonson secured 199.5 points to finish second and settle for the silver medal.

The State team are led by Kh Jackal as coach cum manager.
