Imphal, September 29 2025:
Expressing disturbance upon witnessing the immense amount of garbage blocking the drains at New Checkon and Hatta, Wangkhei AC MLA Thangjam Arunkumar has urged the people not to treat drains as dustbins.
He made the remark during a drain cleaning initiative carried out with the help of a JCB to clear the drains on either side of the road at New Checkon and Hatta.
Saying blocked drains are a common issue in most constituencies of the State, he cited this problem as one of the major reasons for frequent flooding in Manipur, which in turn, damages the roads and reduces their lifespan significantly.
He held people living along the drains (including shopkeepers) responsible for choking them.
Instead of treating them as a channel for water to flow, they dump waste materials and turn drains into dustbins, he said.
With this accumulation of garbage, water easily overflows when it rains and causes floods.
Speaking about the ongoing drain cleaning effort at New Checkon and Hatta, he said that finding an appropriate place to dispose of the garbage removed from the drain will be yet another problem.
The Wangkhei AC MLA advised people to get the necessary IMC (Imphal Municipal Corporation) card to dispose of their household waste responsibly.
The MLA further urged people to collectively maintain the drains in their respective areas and appealed to local clubs to conduct cleanliness drives periodically.
