The Manipur Hawkers' Association (MHA) celebrated the 44th Hawkers Day at the Manipur Press Club today.

The observance presided by MHA president Wangkhem Ajit was graced by Manipur People's Party (MPP) president S Brojen as chief guest and Editors' Guild Manipur president Khogendra Khomdram and All Manipur Working Journalists' Union (AMWJU) president Asem Bhakta as guests of honour.

He mentioned that MHA members up to the age of 55 can enrol in a health insurance scheme.
Surjit added that MHA members have been provided with CMHT cards, and those who have reached the age of 65 years are receiving pension.
Khogendra Khomdram stated that journalist bodies will extend all possible support in establishing a corpus fund for newspaper hawkers.
Noting that newspaper circulation has declined drastically since the COVID-19 pandemic, he added that PDF versions of newspapers are often shared on social media, even before media houses upload them.
He also mentioned that some readers even express that hawkers are no longer necessary, as they often read the news online before the physical papers are distributed.
The EGM president appealed to all concerned not to reproduce newspapers on social media in the exact way they were printed.
Emphasising that people should respect every job, he added that it is 'our duty' to keep our professions alive.
Many journalists are working even with minimal wages due to their love for the profession, he said.
The number of newspapers in Manipur has dwindled, with only six or seven still in publication, he said and added that keeping newspaper publication alive is challenging, but they will make every effort to sustain it.
