Imphal, January 25 2026:
The Campaign for Just and Fair Delimitation (JFD) has once again urged the Government of India to conduct the Census exercise only after implementing the National Register of Citizens (NRC) or a similar mechanism in the State.
Addressing a public meeting at Uripok Sorbon Thingel Haorungbam Leikai today, JFD finance secretary Sunil Karam emphasized that conducting the Census exercise under the current circumstances in Manipur would not yield accurate figures.
He said that they have submitted several memoranda to Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla to defer the Census, but the Governor has been ignoring their appeals.
Stating that Manipur needs an elected Government, as the President's Rule administration has not addressed the concerns of the people regarding the Census, he added that the Census operation could be deferred if a Cabinet decision is taken after forming a popular Government.
Sunil also stated that the BJP MLAs in Manipur are unable to exert pressure on their Central leadership to defer the Census operation and the same is unfortunate.
Claiming that the Government of India has been plotting to suppress the Meitei community and the Meitei insurgent groups by colluding with the Kukis, he questioned why the Kukis are allowed to plant poppies right under the nose of the Assam Rifles.
