Imphal, February 28 2024:
A 12-day old infant was restored to the care of her biological mother yesterday following immediate intervention of Manipur Commission for Protection of Child Rights (MCPCR) acting on a complaint lodged with the Commission.
According to a statement issued by Keisam Pradip-kumar, Chairperson, MCPCR, the complainants were a representative of Women Action for Development (WAD) and the elder brother of the lactating woman.
MCPCR stated that the infant was separated from her nursing mother as the woman returned to her maternal home following quarrels with her husband who is a resident of Imphal West.
Considering that the biological mother is the most competent natural care giver for such an infant who is in desperate need of breast-feeding and other specific care, MCPCR put forward its opinion that immediate restoration of the infant to the biological mother's care is paramount for protecting survival and development rights of the infant.
Further, MCPCR has urged the young couple not to take any drastic action, including immediate separation or divorce, which may be detrimental to the emotional well-being and wholesome development of their child.
