Responding to an earlier notice, police have informed Manipur Human Rights Commission that one O Naba Singh (30) of Oinam Bazar had raped a girl from Imphal East with false promise of marrying her.
Police report submitted to the rights panel on July 10 stated that the victim had lodged a written complaint to SP Imphal West in this connection.
The complaint said that the accused Naba eloped with the girl on May 30 last and kept her concealed at a place in Oinam where she was subjected to repeated sexual harassment.
Negotiation between the two families had taken place and a date for marriage was fixed after the customary Waroipot Puba was performed on Oct 17.But till date the family members of the accused person have not come forward to solemnise the marriage.
Based on the complaint, OC of Imphal Police Station registered an FIR case under section 366/354/376 of Indian Penal Code and the same was transferred to CO Nambol PS as the place of occurrence falls within the jurisdiction of the latter.
The accused Naba was arrested and remanded to police custody till July 19, the reports further said, adding the investigation is also still going on.
After perusing the report, the rights panel today asked the DGP to submit progress report of the investigation within four weeks.
The right panel has also fixed August 16 for further proceeding of the case.
