Imphal, July 12:
Reacting strongly against the custodial killing of a woman, Thangjam Manorama alias Henthoi of Bamon Kampu by 17 Assam Rifles personnel and the rising cases of extra judicial killings by security forces in the last few years, the Democratic People's Party has called for an all political party meeting to take a definite decision on how to deal with such excesses.
Speaking to newsmen at the Manipur Press Club, DPP spokesman RK Anand said that the time has come for all political parties in the State to take a firm decision against the excesses of the security personnel.
The insurgency movement in the State can be solved only through political dialogues and can never be tackled through military might, added Anand.
Demanding stern action against the erring Assam Rifles personnel, RK Anand said that the army authority should constitute a Court Martial and duly punish all those involved in killing Manorama.
The very act of the security personnel violates the Constitution of India, he observed.
Going on the offensive against the excesses of the security personnel, RK Anand said that the security personnel have come to pose a threat to the very survival of the Manipuri people and accused them of terrorising the people in name of maintaining law and order.
On the other hand the rule of law has been violated by the security personnel.
Accusing the Centre of discriminating the people of Manipur and the North East, RK Anand said that New Delhi has been viewing the people of the region much like the British colonisers.
The DPP will soon take an opinion poll on the Disturbed Area act imposed in the State, said Anand.
DPP president Udoi Thongam, who was also present said that the conduct of the security personnel smack of communal policies adopted against the people.
