Murder accused sent to jail

Imphal, January 30 2026: 23-year-old Surendrajit Oinam who is accused of murdering his own aunt, Oinam Thoibi has been remanded in judicial custody till February 13, 2026 .

Surendrajit Oinam (23) s/o Shanta Oinam of Singjamei Makha Oinam Thingel was produced before the Court of CJM Imphal West today by a team of Singjamei police station after the completion of police custody period along with a prayer for judicial custody remand.

An APP of the State submitted that on January 20, 2026 at around 2.30 pm, Oinam Prabhabati, younger sister of the victim reported to Singjamei police station stating that her elder sister Oinam Thoibi alias Ibendhou (75) d/o late Ibomchamubi of Singjamei Oinam Thingel Makha Leikai living alone in a separate house since 50 years back was last seen on January 17 at around 5 pm and calls to her mobile phone went unanswered since then.

On January 20, Oinam Bimola, another younger sister of the victim, checked victim's house and she found the house closed from outside.

On opening the door, Bimola saw the victim lying dead under her bed.

Even though the dead body of Thoibi was covered with a cloth her legs were visible.

Soon after, some locals also rushed in and they found some shoe prints on the floor inside the victim's house.

In the course of investigation, the accused was picked up on suspicion for interrogation and on preliminary interrogation, Surendrajit admitted that he had committed the murder of his aunt.

He disclosed that he had an argument with his family members on January 13 about the condition of his house and the financial condition that their family was facing.

On the same day, he contacted his aunt (victim) at night to arrange a rented room for him as he was not willing to stay at his home.

On January 14, Surendrajit went to his aunt Bimola's house located at Thangmeiband and asked for arranging a lodge for temporary dwelling after which Bimola and Thoibi arranged a lodge near Bimola's house and stayed there alone.

The accused further disclosed that on January 17, he went to Kangla to pray there.

On reaching the western Kangla Gate, he dived into Kanglapat and was picked up by security personnel who contacted his family members.

After some time, family members including Bimola and Thoibi came and they took away Surendrajit but he went to his rented room.

On the same day, the accused came to the victim's house.

He talked with his aunt about dinner and she asked the accused to have chicken for dinner.

In the meantime, the accused asked the victim for some money.

At this, Thoibi scolded Surendrajit for expending huge amounts of money unnecessarily.

This angered Surendrajit.

He went to the kitchen, came back with a knife and stabbed the victim on the head several times, slit her throat and chopped the victim's fingers.

Later, the dead body was dragged beneath the bed and covered with a blanket.

He also tried to burn the dead body by using a small gas cylinder but in vain.

The accused also disclosed that after committing the crime, he washed his hands in the washroom, bolted and locked the house from outside before fleeing from the spot, riding a scooty toward Langdum.

He held the night in a foothill, changed his clothes and put them inside the toolbox of the scooty.

On January 18, Surendrajit went to a stone-crusher and moved inside a khola (labourers' tent).

When one of the labourers asked Surendrajit why he was staying the night at Langdum, he replied that he had some family issue and ran away from home.

On hearing his reply, the labourer contacted Surendrajit's family and informed them about his presence at Langdum.

Even as Surendrajit's parents came to Langdum to take him home, he rode on his scooty to another place on the way home.

On the next day (January 19), the accused went to Wangkhei Thangjam Leikai to purportedly buy a knife.

However, on seeing the suspicious manner of Surendrajit, the owner of the shop shouted whether he (accused) was there to steal.

Soon a mob gathered and a police team came and picked up the accused and took him to Porompat police station.

As requested by his family members, Porompat Police dropped the accused at RIMS Hospital for treatment. On the next morning (January 20), the accused came back home along with his family members.

The APP submitted that from the investigation conducted so far it can established that the accused committed the murder of his aunt mercilessly and prayed for judicial custody remand.

The Court, after hearing the submission of the APP and on perusal of the case record, remanded the murder accused in judicial custody till February 13 .
