Imphal/Saikot, April 28:
Believe or Not!! .
A patient from Saikot village of Churachandpur district who had a large tumour behind his ear and whic was diagnosed as Cancer by doctors of the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) has today claimed that the tumour has vanished after drinking a potion made from the extracts of a plant traditionally used by Hmar people as medicine.
82-year old Chawlien Hmar, a resident of Saikot village of Churachandpur, located along Sugnu Road was reportedly admitted to RIMS with a large tumour growing behind his right side ear in 2004.The doctors in the Radiology Department of the Institute had diagnosed it as a case of Cancer and had even fixed the date for performing operation to remove it.

However, as his family members were not in a position to meet the medical expenses to be incurred, Chawlien Hmar had been staying at home for the last three years enduring the pain.
One day in March of 2007, unable to bear the pain anymore, Chawlien Hmar asked some of his children to go and pluck the leaves of a plant, known in local dialect as Zanlung Damdei, which is being used by Hmar people since time immemorial as a medical herb and drank the extracts of the said plant.
Within hours of drinking the juice, Chawlien felt that the pain has subsided, and by July of the same year, the swelling reduced to normalcy.
Chawlien Hmar said that although he has not gone to the doctors to find out whether he is still suffering from Cancer or not, but he is not feeling pain anymore.
On hearing about his 'miraculous relieve' from drinking the potion made from Zanlung Damdei, Chawlien Hmar said other people in his village have been coming to him requesting for the said potion to treat various health related problems like Cancer, Piles, stomach and body ache.
All of them also claimed to have been getting positive response from the treatment, Chawlien said, adding that now-a-days people have been coming to him even before he wakes up from sleep in the morning.
When The Sangai Express went to Saikot Village and the residence of Chawlien Hmar to verify the claim, a long line of people waiting to get the 'miracle potion' was seen and the family members noting down their names and preparing to dole out the liquid medicine in a large container.
The family members said that so far in all 11,200 people have come to take the medicine, but they have not charge anything from them.
The popularity of Zanlung Damdei has gained so much so in the village now that it has been renamed as Chawlien Damdei and an institute called Chawlien Cancer Medicine Research Agency has been set up.
The Agency has taken up necessary measures for sending sample of Zanlung Damdei to a testing laboratory at New Delhi to find out the medicinal values of the plant and what are the other diseases that can be treated with the help of this plant extracts, secretary of the Agency Lalhmuok Fazoite said.
He further informed that the Agency has also taken up the onus of finding out whether Chawlien is still suffering from Cancer or not.
Talking to this reporter, 40-year old Lalromrut Hmar, a patient of breast cancer with swelling of her left arm, said that in 2006 she was confirmed of having breast cancer after a medical examination at a testing laboratory at Imphal.
But her condition has been improved considerably after taking the potion made from Zanlung Damdei.
MO in-charge of Saikot PHC Dr Bieksang said while comparing the reports of the medical check up conducted during March last and the one taken yesterday, he has noticed the condition of Lalromrut has improved a lot.
As a result, she is continuing to take the potion, he added.
