The All India Congress Committee (AICC) may appoint a new president of the Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC), replacing the current president Keisham Meghachandra, MLA from Wangkhem Assembly Constituency as the party prepares to strengthen its campaign in the lead-up to the 13th Manipur Legislative Assembly elections scheduled for early 2027 .
According to a well placed source, there is growing sentiments among Congress leaders and PCC members in Manipur on the need for a leadership change to bolster the party's prospects and secure a decisive victory to form the Government in 2027 and the AICC leaders including Leader of the Opposition (LoP) Rahul Gandhi have taken note of it.
The source revealed that a majority of PCC members across 50 of Manipur's 60 Assembly Constituencies-excluding the 10 Constituencies represented by Kuki MLAs are advocating for a leadership change to strengthen the party's position.
The source further disclosed that the AICC has consulted four Congress MLAs in Manipur, who have submitted their opinions on the proposed leadership change.
Meghachandra has held the MPCC president post since April 2022.Another Congress leader also hinted at a possible leadership change in MPCC, stating that the decision rests with Rahul Gandhi.
