Footpaths along Governor Road in shambles

Imphal, July 24 2025:
After the President's Rule was imposed in February this year, development works around Imphal city have picked up over the past few weeks.
However, the same cannot be said for the footpath along the Governor's Road located in the heart of the city in Paona Bazar and west of the Raj Bhavan.
The footpath stretching from the erstwhile Friends' Mini Hall turning till Keishampat is in dilapidated condition, especially the portion from Sandy Photo Studio till the turning of Indra Colour.

The footpath is full of holes and unclosed drains.
As such, many shops including press units along this route are facing serious issues, not to mention the inconveniences caused to pedestrians.
One such shopkeeper spoke to The People's Chronicle, stating that the road is one the busiest with auto passenger services to and from Singjamei, Wangkhei, Kshetrigao and Porompat operating from morning till evening.
On top of this, the road is also used by private individuals.
As such, there is no space for the pedestrians to walk other than the footpath.
However, the footpath has not been repaired for a long time.
Following the floods last year, the concrete slabs on top of the drains were removed for de-clogging work but left uncovered till date.
As such, the footpath is now serving as an open drain, making it impossible for pedestrians to walk.
The shopkeeper also stated that many commercial outlets such as printing press and tailoring shops are located on this road.
Customers do not want to visit the shops due to absence of the footpath and as such, the shops' business are failing.
Thus, the shopkeeper urged the government to repair the footpath at the earliest.
Mention may be made here that the Imphal West district administration had been conducting eviction drives to remove encroachments on footpaths.
As such, people are hoping that the government would focus on Governor Road and do the needful as soon as possible.
