Imphal, June 21 2025:
The All Manipur Working Journalists' Union (AMWJU) and Editors' Guild Manipur (EGM) have lifted the boycott on the Manipur Government, as well as Central and State forces.
The boycott was imposed in response to the May 20 Gwaltabi incident, where personnel of the 4th Mahar Regiment instructed journalists travelling in a State Transport bus to cover the "Manipur State Transport" signage while enroute to Ukhrul to cover the Shirui Lily Festival.
The resolution to lift the boycott was taken during an emergency meeting of AMWJU and EGM in the larger interest of the people as the inquiry committee set up to probe the incident has submitted its report to the authorities.
However, AMWJU and EGM have resolved to continue their protest by having journalists wear black ribbons while on duty and displaying a slogan in front of every newspaper to uphold the rights of journalists.
AMWJU and EGM apologized for the inconvenience caused to the public during the boycott.
It may be mentioned that AMWJU and EGM submitted a memorandum to Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla regarding the Gwaltabi incident on the same day, May 20, following which a two-member inquiry committee was set up to probe the incident.
The inquiry committee, which was instructed to submit its report within 15 days, submitted its final report to the Chief Secretary on June 16, however, there is still no indication of any action being taken against those involved.
AMWJU and EGM stated that they may take further action based on the Government's response to the inquiry report on the Gwaltabi incident.
