Imphal, November 18 2024:
After women and children taken hostages by Kuki militants have been found brutally murdered, the Manipur Commission for Protection of Child Rights (MCPCR) has sought the intervention of the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) and the National Commission for Women (NCW) .
In letters its Chairperson Keisam Pradipkumar sent to the NCPCR and the NCW, the Manipur Commission for Protection of Child Rights urged the members of the National Commissions to visit Manipur at the earliest and take stock of the situation.
The MCPCR said that the conflict since May 3, 2023 has killed many children and displaced 25,000 of them.
An immediate intervention from National rights panels such as the NCPCR and the NCW is desperately needed in order to bring a safer and protective environment for the hapless children and women, said the MCPCR, urging the bodies to issue recommendations to the Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of Women and Child Department and other agencies concerned.
The violent situation in Manipur, perhaps has reached its highest peak, as it has contravened all ethical norms and universally accepted legal standards that protect noncombatant children and women even in armed conflict situations, said the MCPCR.
The 18-month-long unrest has already killed many innocent children besides displacing 25000 children affecting their basic education, health and safety, it said.
The recent brutal killing of three minors namely Baby Telem Thajamanbi Devi (8 years) d/o T Utam Singh of Jiribam, Master Laishram Chingkheinganba Singh and half year) s/o L Herojit Singh of Modhupur, Jiribam, Master Laishram Langamba Singh (8 months) s/o L Herojit Singh of Jiribam along with two women after abduction has again testified the worsening volatility of the unrestrained situation, it said.
The NCPCR and NCW may issue befitting recommendations to the concerned Ministries such as Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of Women and Child Department and other agencies to to bring about a safer and protective environment for the hapless children
and women, it said.
