NEIUK calls for stricter actions to protect NE people

Imphal, September 13 2026: Condemning the brutal assault that killed Chongtham Vikram in Delhi recently, the North East Indians in UK (NEIUK) has urged the Government to ensure a swift, transparent and thorough investigation and bring all responsible for the death to justice.

Sadly, the brutal killing of Ch Vikram is not the first tragedy to cause profound concern within the North East Indian community, said the NEIUK in a statement.

Earlier, a 24-year-old student from Tripura, Anjel Chakma, lost his life following a brutal assault in Dehradun, Uttarakhand.

His death caused widespread anguish across the North East and renewed concerns about racial abuse, discrimination and the safety of North East Indians living and studying away from their home States.

These incidents cannot simply be viewed in isolation, it said.

While ensuring a thorough and impartial investigation into Ch Vikram's case, the NEIUK said that the Government and authorities should take the concerns of the North East Indian community regarding racial discrimination, harassment and violence seriously.

Governments must strengthen measures to protect people from the North East living, working and studying across India, and ensure that complaints of racial abuse, harassment and intimidation are properly recorded, investigated and acted upon, it said.

Further, the Government should develop stronger awareness and education initiatives to tackle prejudice and discrimination against people from the North East, it added.

"We extend our deepest condolences and heartfelt solidarity to Vikram's family, friends and loved ones during this devastating time.

No family should endure the pain of losing a loved one in such horrific circumstances," it said.
