Khangabok Loukol faces man-made flood, farmers urge intervention by MLAs

Thoubal, July 13 2025: A large expanse of agricultural land in Khangabok Part 3 under Thoubal district has been submerged repeatedly every year, which local farmers attribute to a "man-made flood", caused by the unregulated overflow of water from Kharungpat and Ekop Pat into the ring band area.

According to reports, each year around 400 to 500 meters of the Ring Band area adjoining to the Khrungpat and Ekop Pat has been overflowed.

affecting several key paddy fields of Kiyam Loukol, Keipha Loukol, Bihu Loukol, Salam Loukol, Sagai Makhong Loukol, Lalikhong Loukol, and Khongnang macha Makha Loukol.

Moirangthem Mahen, chairperson of Khangabok Pt 3 GP during, along with a team of farmers from the Universal Farmer Organisation Khangabok while visiting the affected areas, pointed out that the Ring Band/Saban near the Arong River, particulary at the junction of Tentha and Khangabok has caused water to overflow at around 400 to 500 meters and flooded the fields for the past two to three years.

He stated that while farmers have tried to block the water flow using their own resources, these makeshift solutions have proved ineffective.

This year around 1000 pari of farmland has been affected due to flooding of water, and the farmers fear that the their hard work of cultivating these fields will go in vain.

He also mentioned that the ring band, if raised by around 3 to 4 feet, could potentially prevent the water from overflowing into the field.

However, due to the area lying between two constituencies, responsibility for the problem has remained unresolved.

He therefore appealed to the MLAs Wangjing Tentha and Khangabok constituencies to take immediate steps to assess the situation on the ground and initiate a longterm solution to prevent recurring agricultural losses and support the livelihood of the farming community.
