Man held for rape attempt

Lilong police have arrested a 34-year-old man who allegedly attempted to rape a 14-year-old girl at Lilong Arapti Lamkhai.
Apart from constituting a JAC against the incident, Lilong Arapti Maning Leikai locals staged a sit-in-protest and conducted a public meeting in this regard today.
JAC convenor Mayengbam Jinat said that the girl is a Class VIII student and the incident happened on September 18 .
She said that one Md Farooque s/o Nasir Ali of Lilong Khunou near Lilong police station quietly followed the girl when she returned home from her school that day.
When she reached Lilong Arapti Lamkhai, Farooque allegedly took the girl in his arms from behind and pushed her into a bush in his bid to rape the girl, Jinat said.
As the girl shouted for help, Farooque even tried to strangulate her, Jinat said and added that the man however fled the area after he saw a vehicle coming towards the place.
The girl then recounted the incident to a man who came from the direction where Farooque had fled.
The girl took the Farooque's name, address and his father's name from the unknown man and returned home, Jinat said.
She further said that a complaint was lodged at Lilong police station after she narrated the whole incident to her uncle the same day.
After Lilong police arrested Farooque, he was remanded to police custody for five days by CJM Thoubal, Jinat said.
Meanwhile, during today's public meeting, locals of Lilong Arapti Maning Leikai resolved to press the authority concerned to award life imprisonment to Farooque and take up necessary action.
It was also resolved to urge the Government to open a police picket at a distance of around 200 metres from Arapti Lamkhai.
The locals also decided to initiate agitation with supports from different organisations and Meira Paibi bodies if the.
Government fails to translate these resolutions into action by
September 24 .
